How to Minimise Risk in Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is one of the most personal decisions you'll ever make — and like most things that matter, the outcome depends heavily on how much thought you put in before you even step into a clinic.

Here are five things that have genuinely helped my clients (and myself) approach plastic surgery with more clarity, less anxiety, and far better results.

1. Choose a doctor who owns the whole journey

There's a world of difference between a clinic that runs on volume and a doctor who personally sees you through consultation, surgery, and recovery. Smaller, more specialised clinics tend to offer exactly that — one doctor who knows your case inside out, answers your calls, and is accountable if something doesn't go as planned.

We're not all the same. Factory-style operations might be efficient, but they're not built for nuance. The best outcomes come from personalised care, not a conveyor belt.

2. Know what you love about yourself before you change anything

Most people walk into a consultation laser-focused on what they want to fix. But here's something just as important: know what you want to keep.

Sit down and make two lists. Things you like about your appearance — your jawline, your eye shape, the way your nose sits on your face. And things you'd genuinely like to improve. Bring both lists to your doctor. A good surgeon won't just hear your concerns; they'll protect what makes you, you.

3. Have a vision — even a vague one

You don't need a Pinterest board of exact references (though it doesn't hurt). What matters is having a general sense of where you're going. Where are you now, and where do you want to be after surgery?

Being able to articulate that — even loosely — lets you and your doctor visualise the outcome together. It gives the consultation direction and helps the surgeon understand not just what you want changed, but the feeling you're trying to achieve.

4. Be realistic about what's anatomically possible for you

We all have faces and features we admire. But Jennie's eyes on your face might not be what actually makes your face stunning — and a great surgeon will tell you that.

Every face has its own bone structure, tissue depth, and proportions. What works beautifully on someone else may not translate to you. That's not a limitation — it's an opportunity. When you stay open to adjusting your direction based on what your anatomy allows, you're far more likely to end up with results that feel natural and truly yours.

5. Ask the doctor what they see, not just what you want

Here's something most people don't realise: every surgeon has their own aesthetic sensibility. And however long your wishlist is, a good surgeon will ultimately do what they believe will look beautiful — because their craft depends on it.

So instead of only telling them what you want, ask them what they see. What would they recommend for your face? What do they think would suit you? This conversation reveals a lot — about their style, their honesty, and whether they're the right fit for you.

It's good to know what you want. It's better to also know what's possible — and to find a doctor who can bridge the two.
